Hole-Hearted

It’s been twenty years and I’m hardly a hippie anymore
I traded my tie-dyes and sandals for a suit
And three saucy boys and a bossy wife, to boot
Now I hunger for the unholy days of yore

There’s a hole in the sky, now the polar bear lies in a zoo
There’s a hole in the sea where the fish float in oily goo
There’s a hole in my heart that’ll never be whole without you

My wallowing wife fills her life full of fanciful things
And feigning fulfillment disdainfully misquotes Thoreau:
“Quantify, quantify.” But I think I liked the livin’ slow
When you and I like animals did animal things
and the world was still green

There’s a hole in the sky, now the polar bear lies in a zoo
There’s a hole in the sea where the fish float in oily goo
There’s a hole in my heart that’ll never be whole without you

Still in love with you, after all these years
Still in love enough to know the pain won’t disappear
Still in love with you, my earth, my everything
Still in love enough to breathe a sigh and try to dream
Still in love hole-heartedly with you

A score and four years ago flowers and free-love were fine
But spending our days the bohemian way couldn’t last
I yearned for something more substantial, I earned it fast
And learned that love ain’t free ‘mong folks like mine

There’s a hole in the sky, now the polar bear lies in a zoo
There’s a hole in the sea where the fish float in oily goo
There’s a hole in my heart that’ll never be whole without you

Still in love with you, after all these years
Still in love enough to know the pain won’t disappear
Still in love with you, my earth, my everything
Still in love enough to breathe a sigh and try to dream
Still in love hole-heartedly with you
